Former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has openly criticized Ruben Amorim's performance as the coach of Manchester United. According to him, the Portuguese coach is "drowning in tidal waves of mediocrity" and leading what he considers to be the worst Manchester United team he has ever seen.
Manchester United's season under Amorim has been far from impressive. Since replacing Erik ten Hag as coach, the Red Devils have won only 11 out of 25 games across all competitions. Their latest outing resulted in a disappointing 1-1 draw with Spanish side Real Sociedad.
If they fail to secure a win in the second leg against Sociedad, their season could effectively be over. The team has already been knocked out of both domestic cups and is currently languishing in the bottom half of Premier League standings.
Expectations vs Reality
Carragher believes that while some blame can be placed on players for their poor form, it is also fair for fans and club management to expect more from Coach Amorim.
Jamie Carragher, Liverpool legend, said:
“This is the worst United team of my lifetime and the bare minimum that could have been expected after Amorim took charge, that the team would look like they are being coached better than they were under Ten Hag, has not materialised. It is no shock United were beaten by Fulham in the FA Cup last weekend. United are deficient in every area of the pitch, 14th in the Premier League and looking over their shoulder at Everton and West Ham rather than outperforming anyone above them.
“United’s players have not responded well to his methods. Has a single player looked any better than they were under Ten Hag? In fairness, most of the United players have surrendered any right to express disapproval about any manager given how poor they have been for so long. United should be heading into next season amid a buzz of excitement about what their new coach might do after a pre-season of physical and tactical conditioning. Instead, there will be trepidation and fear of another slog of a campaign.”
Despite this harsh critique on Amorim’s work so far at Old Trafford and his apparent struggle with meeting demands at such a high-profile club, Carragher does not believe it’s time yet for him to step down.
Looking ahead
While the current situation at Manchester United is far from ideal, it's important to remember that football is a game of ups and downs. The team has faced challenges before and emerged stronger. Fans will be hoping that this difficult period under Coach Amorim will serve as a catalyst for change and improvement in future seasons.
And while Carragher has torn into the work that Amorim has done so far at Old Trafford as he struggles to deal with the demands at the club, he does not believe that it is the time to relieve him of his duties quite yet.
