ITV Sport has recently unveiled the title sequence for its FIFA World Cup 2026 coverage. The broadcaster's film, which is a blend of open road footage and iconic moments from World Cup history, promises to take football fans on an unforgettable American Road Trip.
The title sequence is a 1m22s film set to Rascal Flatts’s cover of Tom Cochrane’s song "Life Is a Highway". This creative approach combines footage of the open road shot on 16mm film with famous moments and faces from the history of global football.
The titles serve as a visual overdrive of Americana and Northern America more broadly, according to ITV. The "Life Is a Highway" song gained popularity in Disney’s animated film Cars, adding another layer of cultural relevance to this cinematic journey.
John McKenna, producer & CEO, Noah Media Group, said:
“It is always a privilege to be chosen to deliver the opening titles for ITV Sport’s FIFA Men’s World Cup coverage. For this tournament, we wanted to create something that felt different – less animation-led, more cinematic, and something that simply felt like summer. The idea of a road trip across North America, shot on 16mm film and woven together with the incredible World Cup archive, felt perfect. I’m hugely proud of what our team has delivered and hope the sequence, together with Rascal Flatts’ iconic ‘Life is a Highway’, connects with viewers and helps capture the excitement of the tournament ahead.”
Historic commentary spanning half a century
One unique feature about these titles is that they incorporate historic ITV commentary from across the last 50 years. This includes Huw Johns’ commentary on Pelé during the 1970 World Cup, Brian Moore, John Helm, Clive Tyldesley and Sam Matterface's insights on Lionel Messi in 2022. The voices that open these titles are Mark Pougatch and Laura Woods who will lead ITV’s coverage for the forthcoming tournament.
This project was commissioned by Paul McNamara - executive director and producer at ITV Sport Production - and produced by Noah Media Group. Tim Mackenzie Smith directed it while Andrew White filmed it with editing by Hussein Hassan. ITV plans to broadcast live from a custom-built rooftop studio in Brooklyn, New York throughout the tournament duration. Its coverage begins with Mexico v South Africa - one of the first two matches including one host nation - live from Mexico City at 8pm (UK) on ITV1, ITV4, ITVX, STV and STV Player.
ITV Sport’s coverage will be led by Mark Pougatch, Laura Woods and Semra Hunter. They will be joined by a team of pundits, presenters, commentators and reporters including Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Gary Neville, Patrick Vieira among others. With its cinematic titles for the World Cup 2026 coverage that blend iconic football moments with an American road trip theme set to a popular song cover - all while featuring historic commentary - ITV Sport is set to provide an engaging and immersive experience for sports fans worldwide.
