Match Preview: Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund

Bayern Munich welcome their greatest rivals to the Allianz Arena on Saturday for one of the most hotly anticipated fixtures of the season, as they attempt to win the top prize for a ninth consecutive time. With RB Leipzig on the march, especially if they drop out of the UEFA Champions League and focus solely on the Bundesliga, they will know that achieving this goal will be far from easy. Dortmund are trying to avoid the embarrassment of missing out on the top four but with resurgent Wolfsburg and solid Frankfurt sides in the mix, it isn't certain that they will make it.

While Bayern do look great, they are not perfect and have already lost two Bundesliga games this calendar year and suffered a shock exit from the DFB Pokal against second tier side Holstein Kiel. They also recently conceded three in a 3-3 draw with relegation strugglers Arminia Bielefeld, a team Dortmund beat 3-0 in their previous league outing, and coach Edin Terzińá will feel their defence can be got at. Dortmund's own form this calendar year is not flawless either. Their hammerings of Arminia and bottom team Schalke were impressive but they have the air of flat track bullies about them, losing several games to sides around them in the table like Freiburg, Leverkusen and Monchengladbach.

When it comes to Bundesliga meetings between these two giants, Bayern have won the last four with Dortmund's last win coming in 2018. Hansi Flick's Bayern side will be keen to build on their win against Cologne in their previous outing, and with victory over Dortmund, they would then face mid table side Werder Bremen next weekend with some momentum to put a run of victories together across a busy March schedule.

Ones to Watch: Der Klassiker

Robert Lewandowski, the man many consider the best football player in the world right now, continues to produce for Bayern Munich with 28 goals and six assists in the Bundesliga so far. He will be a threat in this game, looking to add to his current record of 19 goals in 22 appearances against his old club, one of which came in their last meeting in November. Robert Lewandowski is an iconic forward. Give him any opportunity and he will surely score.

Erling Braut Haaland has registered 17 goals and 4 assists from 18 appearances in the Bundesliga this season. He is most definitely on the march and getting better all the time. Technically he has a better goals per 90 average than Lewandowski in the league with an average of 0.99 to the Pole's 1.35. The 20 year old is already a proven goalscorer and one of the best young football players in the world. His flawless finishing makes him a threat to just about any defence and Bayern Munich have proven lately that they can be weak in this department.

Scoreline Prediction: 3-3

It is always difficult to predict an exact score when these two meet. With the immense quality in both attacks and the potential frailties in their defences, I expect goals and some great football. I don't see the home advantage of the Allianz Arena being a decisive factor in the favour of Bayern Munich, with fans still barred due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I also believe that despite Dortmund's position in the table, the starting line-ups are evenly matched and in the end I feel they will cancel each other out in a free flowing match.
