Julian Alvarez is reportedly unhappy with his playing time at Etihad

Chelsea fans are eagerly anticipating the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca, hoping he can bring silverware back to Stamford Bridge during his first season in charge. The Blues have been trophy-less since Thomas Tuchel's tenure, but with Maresca taking over from Mauricio Pochettino last month, hopes are high.

Maresca will officially begin his role as Chelsea’s head coach at the start of July. The Italian manager is no stranger to success; he was previously in charge of Manchester City’s development squad and acted as Pep Guardiola’s assistant during City’s 2022/23 treble-winning campaign.

Potential reunion on the cards?

In an interesting twist, it appears that Maresca could be reunited with a player he previously worked with. According to Argentinian outlet TyC Sports via 90min, Chelsea is considering a shock move for Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez has reportedly grown frustrated with his current situation at The Etihad and is considering his options ahead of this summer’s transfer window. He joined City from River Plate in 2022 during the same transfer window as Erling Haaland and has since largely acted as understudy to his Norwegian teammate. Despite being an understudy, Alvarez has had a commendable run at Man City. In total, the Argentine striker has scored 36 goals in 103 games across all competitions while also registering 18 assists. However, it seems that this hasn't quelled his frustrations or desire for more regular playtime.

The report suggests that Alvarez would prefer to stay at Man City if he could establish himself as a regular player under Guardiola's management. He is currently contracted to the Premier League champions until the end of the 2027/28 campaign.

Other clubs eyeing Alvarez

Chelsea isn't the only club interested in Alvarez. La Liga club Atletico Madrid and French champions Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be eyeing the Argentine forward.

This potential transfer saga could become one of the summer's most intriguing stories, with several top clubs vying for Alvarez's signature. It remains to be seen where he will end up, but one thing is certain: his decision will have a significant impact on his career and potentially reshape the landscape of European football.

Chelsea fans can look forward to an exciting season under Maresca's leadership. Whether or not they secure Alvarez’s services, it’s clear that big changes are coming to Stamford Bridge.
