A run of four games unbeaten in Serie A has lifted Atalanta to fifth in the table, where they sit level on points with Jose Mourinho's Roma who one place above them. With the title race looking beyond all but Napoli and AC Milan, Gian Piero Gasperini will be targeting Champions League football once again next season, having delivered three consecutive third place finishes. In Europe the Bergamo side have picked up four points from three games but will be bitterly disappointed to have given up a two goal lead last time out against Manchester United. They will have a chance to avenge that defeat tonight in front of their own fans.

United are themselves fifth in the Premier League but under quite different circumstances. While Gasperini is working miracles on a limited budget at Atalanta, a club who hadn't troubled the top six in Serie A since the days of Claudio Caniggia in the late 80s prior to his arrival, Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has just spent over £100m on the likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo in an attempt to return one of the biggest clubs in world football to its former glory. The Red Devils were fully expecting to be a part of a long title race this season but just ten games in they sit eight points adrift of leaders Chelsea and a familiar sense of chaos has already started to loom over Old Trafford. They won 3-0 away at a hapless Spurs at the weekend, just days before the North London side dismissed their own manager, but that victory could barely paper over the cracks of the 5-0 home embarrassment they suffered against bitter rivals Liverpool a week before. Ole's job is under more threat than ever and a positive result tonight against Atalanta is an absolute must as his side prepare for a crunch game against Man City at the weekend.

In terms of injuries, Atalanta are certainly the team with the most problems to worry about. Berat Djimsiti, Robin Gosens, Rafael Toloi, Matteo Pessina and Hans Hateboer are all unavailable, with Gosens and Hateboer crucial parts of the machine. United on the other hand will have to live without Victor Lindelof, which could present a slight issue if Ole intends to use a back three as he did at the weekend. Besides that they have a fully fit squad and one of immense depth compared to that of their opponents.

If United can win they will look pretty comfortable at the top of Group F and be able to focus more on the league with qualification more or less sewn up. Atalanta could survive defeat with their two games remaining against Villarreal and Young Boys not easy tasks but definitely winnable matches. The outcome of this contest will depend very much on which Manchester United turns up. If they are not in the zone, Atalanta's rapid attacking style will catch them out and cause problems, but if their top players perform they can of course run out worthy winners. A point could be the best bet.
